What is Zumba®?

Zumba Fitness® is like no other workout you will ever experience!

Zumba Fitness® was created in the mid-90s by Colombian native Alberto “Beto” Perez, a celebrity fitness trainer and choreographer for International pop superstars.

Inspired by the traditional cumbia, salsa, samba and merengue music he grew up with, Beto paired his favourite pulsating Latin rhythms with the red-hot international dance steps his clients loved and Zumba Fitness® (Spanish slang for “to move fast and have fun”) was born!

Since Beto brought Zumba Fitness® to the US in 1999, it has become one of the fastest-growing, dance-based fitness crazes in the world, with people of all ages falling in love with its infectious music, easy-to-follow dance moves, and body-beautifying benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I just turn up to a class or do I need to book?

Unless it is stated above you can just turn up to the class. If you need to book then drop us an email at info@dance-passion.co.uk or call or text 07751 240 230and we will let you know if we have available spaces for you.

What do I wear for Zumba®?

Clothing for Zumba® should be comfortable and shouldn’t interfere with exercise movements. You will sweat in this class! Layering tee shirts over tank tops is a good idea so you can remove layers if it gets too hot. Exercise pants could be cargo type pants or stretch pants. Wear a good sports bra for support. Wear thick socks that fit snug to prevent blisters. Comfortable shoes are a must! Choose shoes that offer stability and cushion your movements. Avoid shoes with deep treads because they may restrict your movement. Cross trainers or dance specific trainers are best. Bring a towel and bottled water.

I am not coordinated. Can I take Zumba® classes?

We get this question a lot. We can all dance in our own way. Almost every culture in the world has some form of it, and in Latin American countries everyone dances from age 3 to 93. We create a safe, supportive environment in which we can all learn and the routines are simple and fun. When we learn a new dance move, focus on the footwork first, then add arm movements. We give options throughout the classes for the various levels.

How many calories will I burn in Zumba® class?

Zumba® workouts can vary in intensity, and calorie burn depends on an individual’s weight, fitness level and muscle composition. During an hour long session you can burn anywhere from 500 to 800 calories. On average, a 150lb. person can expect to burn 536 calories during an hour of Zumba®. By comparison, the same person would burn 413 calories during an hour of moderate swimming, 477 for an hour of casual tennis and 684 for an hour of running at a 10-minute-mile pace.
